Wellness Canned Cat Food Recall
WellPet, the makers of Wellness brand pet food has issued a voluntary recall of the following canned cat foods due to inadequate levels of thiamine (vitamin B1).. Please return any cans with these dates for a full refund. All flavors and sizes with "best by" dates from April 14, 2003 through September 30, 2013. Chicken & Herring with "best by" dates of November 10, 2013 through November 17, 2013. According to the company, "cats fed only the affected lots for several weeks may be at risk for developing a thiamine deficiency. Thiamine is essential for cats. Symptoms of deficiency displayed by an affected cat can be gastrointestinal or neurological in nature. Early signs of thiamine deficiency may include decreased appetite, salivation, vomiting, and weight loss. In advanced cases, neurologic signs can develop, which may include ventriflexion (bending towards the floor) of the neck, wobbly walking, circling, falling and seizures. If your cat has consumed the recalled lots and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian immediately. If treated properly, thiamine deficiency is typically reversible."
